How Many Tiles Are in Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire uses 144 tiles: circles, bamboo, characters, winds, dragons, flowers, and seasons. Full breakdown and why four of each matters.

A classic Mahjong Solitaire board uses 144 tiles — one full traditional mahjong set. That gives exactly 72 pairs to clear. Mobile games often use fewer tiles per level, but they still take every tile from the same set.

The 144-tile set at a glance

  • Circles (dots): 1–9, four of each — 36 tiles.
  • Bamboo: 1–9, four of each — 36 tiles.
  • Characters: 1–9, four of each — 36 tiles.
  • Winds: East, South, West, North, four of each — 16 tiles.
  • Dragons: Red, Green, White, four of each — 12 tiles.
  • Flowers: four unique tiles.
  • Seasons: four unique tiles.

36 + 36 + 36 + 16 + 12 + 4 + 4 = 144. For what each suit and symbol represents, see mahjong tile meanings.

How many different faces are there?

There are 34 faces that each appear four times (27 suit tiles, 4 winds, 3 dragons), plus 8 one-of-a-kind bonus tiles. In Solitaire, the 4 flowers count as one matching group and the 4 seasons count as another. That leaves 36 matching groups of four tiles each — 144 tiles in total.

Why four of each matters

Every face needs two pairs. When you see three copies of a face free at once, you have a choice: which two to match first. The copy you leave behind may be the key to a buried stack — or it may be blocking one. That decision is the heart of Mahjong Solitaire strategy.

Counting helps too. If two copies of a face are already gone and you see one more, you know exactly where the final partner must be — somewhere still hidden.

Flowers and seasons

Each flower and season tile is unique, but any flower matches any other flower and any season matches any other season. This makes them the most flexible tiles on the board. Experienced players often save them to unlock a tight spot later.

Smaller boards on mobile

A full 144-tile board is long and dense on a phone screen. Many mobile games use 40 to 120 tiles per level instead, sometimes with fewer distinct faces, to keep tiles large and sessions short. The rules stay the same; the board is simply a part of the set rather than all of it.

ZenCraft Mahjong Solitaire scales board size with the campaign: early levels are small and readable, and later levels add tiles, layers, and harder faces.

Quick facts

  • Classic board: 144 tiles, 72 pairs.
  • Classic Turtle layout: 5 layers.
  • 34 standard faces × 4 copies + 8 bonus tiles.
  • Flowers and seasons are matched by group, not by exact face.
